Cleaning of VSBC - The Plan of Attack!

Today at 2:00 is a "rough clean" --
Anyone willing to help sort through leftover day care items is needed.
We will set out junk items and set aside good items for other day care centers in the area. The goal is to be done in one hour! Your help is needed to make this happen.

September 20 is "the deep clean" --
Starting at 9:00am, the entire building will be cleaned from top to bottom, front to back, left to right. Things will be moved, dusted, scrubbed, vacuumed and put back in it's place.
Bring your brooms, mops, vacuum cleaners, chemicals, gloves and your servant attitude.

What will we do with ourselves now?
Many people have many good ideas for what we should do now -- with the building, with ministry opportunities, etc.
A brain storming session will be held after the deep clean. This discussion will continue during the October business meeting. This is your chance to help decide where we go from here -- be a part or sit back and enjoy the ride!

Souper Sunday - Next week

Members and friends of VSBC are invited to Souper Sunday on September 7th at 6:00pm. Our monthly fellowship together to enjoy a bowl of soup together and get to know each other better. Please contact the church for more information.

Nursery Care Givers Needed

Volunteers are needed to take care of our little children during worship time. Please see Cathy Cook to let her know your availability. The more workers in rotation, the more often everyone can be in the worship service.

Sunday, August 31 2008 Morning Worship

Today presents Minister Johann Kim's final Sunday as a staff member. Kim planned and presented a service of praise and worship around many well known hymns and scripture text.

Betty Jeffries opened the service with a reading from Psalm 34:1-10, then prayed for the service. Kim led the congregation in a set of hymns focusing on gathering and worshipping Jesus Christ.

  • Hymn 36 - Praise the Lord! Ye Heavens, Adore Him

  • Hymn 379- Brethren, We Have Met to Worship

  • Hymn 140 - Down at the Cross

  • Hymn 177 - There's Something About That Name

After a time of welcome, the choir and Kim led the entire congregation in Hymn 60 - Be Thou My Vision. Pastor Michael Snearly then had a pastoral prayer, which everyone in the congregation held hands in unity. A special thanks was offered up to God for seeing this congregation through the transition of the Child Development Center being closed, finding places for all the children and providing a job for the staff members who went looking for where He was leading.

Hymn 192 - Soon and Very Soon was enthusiastically sung after Matthew 25;1-13 had been read my Gary Cook. The offering was received while Hanna Kim played an instrumental piece.

Today, Snearly focused on Genesis 3 in a message titled "Paradise Lost." The passage about the fall of man, of Adam's and Eve's rebellion and the separation from God that it created. Like a wedding ring lost in the ocean, we can be found again. Jesus came to seek what is lost and separated. An audio file of the sermon is available on request. Please send an email to info@vinestreetbaptist.org.

After Hymn 54 - Great is Thy Faithfulness was sung during a time of invitation, announcements were presented, followed by Promotion Sunday where several children where handed certificates and congratulated for moving up in the Sunday School program.

Community Yard Sale a big success!

VSBC and the Child Development Center held a community wide yard sale today. Several families rented space and tables, concession items were sold, and the CDC was able to sell a good portion of their resources. All money raised from the CDC items, rental and concessions where given to toward meeting some of the final expenses in closing down the center.

There was a lot of foot traffic in the morning and many of the 'big ticket' items went quickly. Many day care centers and other ministries in the area, as well as some from outlying cities, were able get a bargain on some much needed supplies and resources. At lunch time, hot dogs and hamburgers were sold to those hungry for lunch while they shopped.

Members of VSBC extend thanks and appreciation for church and CDC staff members who volunteered their Saturday to make this event such a success. Hugs and tears could be seen as this final event surrounding the beloved day care came to a close.

Sunday, August 24 2008 Evening Worship

Senior Pastor Michael Snearly opened the service with a story about a recent visit to a church in California. This church appears to have a very laid back approach to worship planning, yet the service still flowed and people were blessed. This story was the background to him being doubling as tonight's Worship Leader and led the congregation through three hymns.
  • 379 - Brethren We Have Met to Worship
  • 14- Praise the Lord, the Almighty
  • 142-There is a Fountain
Snearly continued the sermon series, Why I Am a Baptist, with a teaching on BFM Article XII - Education. Sunday, August 24 2008 Morning Worship

Betty Jeffries opened this morning's service with a reading from Psalm 42, followed by a prayer that reflected on the passage.

This morning, Minister of Praise and Worship, Johann Kim, led the congregation in a set of song that focused on God, His Son, and our deep desire to worship Him.
  • As the Deer
  • Merciful God
  • I Will Glory in My Redeemer
  • Resurrection Hymn
After a time of welcome, Kim made everyone honorary choir members for today's choir special, "Lamb of God." Mickie Bainter assisted.

Pastor Michael Snearly, recently returning from a week in San Fransisco and Oakland, California, introduced a new element to the Pastoral Prayer time by inviting everyone to stand and hold hands while he led in the prayer.

After a reading of Matthew 11:25-30 by Earl Claypool, the congregation sang Hymn 303, "Just as I am." This was followed by special guest, Michelle Lee, presenting an instrumental version of "How Great Thou Art." This particular piece is arranged by E. A. Edgreen and M. W. Johann Kim. Lee played the flute and was accompanied by Hannah Kim.

Snearly brought a message titled, "Love and Marriage," based on Genesis 2:18-25. Although the bad jokes were bad, the focus on God creating Adam and Eve on the sixth day, and what happened with them before the fall, was well received. An audio file of the sermon is available on request. Please send an email to info@vinestreetbaptist.org.

The morning service concluded with Hymn 412 - "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place" and announcements.

Sunday, August 17 2008 Morning Worship

This morning's service was led by Wally Jeffries and accompanied by Hannah Kim. Betty Jeffries opened the service with a reading from Psalm 69:1-15, followed by a prayer. Opening hymns were "His Name is Wonderful" and "Oh How I Love Jesus."

Don Fulton closed the Welcome Time by leading the congregation in community prayer. Scripture from Acts 2:42-47 was read by Josh Cornett. Right before the offering, the congregation sang "Count Your Blessings." Kim played an instrumental version of "Bless Now the Lord, Oh My Soul."

Fulton's message from Matthew 6:19-24, "The Gospel According to Donald Trump," was a teaching on what our heart says about our treasures. Fulton points out the commandments and assessments that Jesus presents to us through The Word. An audio file of the sermon is available on request. Please send an email to info@vinestreetbaptist.org.

Community Yard Sale - August 30

VSBC announces its third Community Wide Yard Sale. This event will be held on August 30th from 8:00am until 2:00pm in the parking lot and back yard.

The primary purpose of the Yard Sale is to raise money from the equipment and supplies used by the Child Development Center (CDC) now available due to it's closing. Child care providers and daycare centers will have an opportunity to preview and 'claim' equipment at a special session on August 29th. Please contact Mickie Bainter, member of the CDC's board of directors, for more information.

Your ugly lamp didn't make the finals for Lynn's annual contest? Have you recently upgraded your tape player to CD and have all this equipment you don't know what to do with? Are you a reseller of wares and need another opportunity to sell, sell, sell?

Friends and neighbors of VSBC are welcome and encouraged to rent booth space. In addition, canopies and tables will be rented. Whatever you make from your stuff is yours. All the money raised through rental and concessions will benefit the employees of the Child Development Center.

$5.00 - Space rental
$5.00 - 8-foot table rental
$5.00 - canopy (shade) rental

If you would like to rent space for the Yard Sale, please contact the church or send an email to info@vinestreetbaptist.org.

Senior Pastor to Continue Education

Senior Pastor, Michael Snearly, will be on a week long trip to San Francisco, CA, to begin work on a PhD. Over the next several years, Snearly will take classes at Golden Gate Theological Seminary (GGTS) via the Internet. Several times a year, Snearly will have to visit the GGTS campus. The majority of the time he is able to communicate with his professors and classmates via video conferencing and email.

The VSBC congregation unanimously passed a resolution several months ago to affirm Sneary's decision to continue his education this way. The resolution included endorsing a letter of recommendation to GGTS and continued prayer support for Snearly and his family.

Sunday, August 10 2008 Morning Worship

Vine Street Baptist Church welcomes back our very own Johann Kim, Minister of Worship and Praise. Kim was out of the country, leading seminars on worship, praise, hymns and singing to the Lord. (Thanks to Wally Jeffries for filling in during Kim's absence.)

After a reading of Psalm 24 by Betty Jeffries, we focused on attributes of God in the songs "All Creatures of Our God and King" and "Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise." Next, we turned our attention to worshiping God's Son with "Lord I Life Your Name on High" and "Meekness and Majesty."

After a few minutes spent in an enjoyable time of neck-huggings and welcomes, a Shape Note Ensemble presented a song inspired by a dream. Pastor Michael Snearly followed, leading those gathered through corporate prayer.

Mickie Bainter read Romans 8:31-39, which was followed by "Here is Love" and our weekly time of offering, during which Hannah Kim played an instrumental version of a popular praise song.

Pastor Snearly preached on Genesis 2:4-17, "A Longing For What We Don't Have." This section is about the beginning of humanities spiral toward sin, yet concludes that if we stop focusing on what we cannot have, we can have life in Christ. An audio file of the sermon time is available on request. Send an email to info@vinestreetbaptist.org.

The service concluded with "Name of All Majesty," announcements, and a benediction.
